About the artist

B. 1992

BASED IN LA JOLLA, CA AND SILVERTHORNE, CO

Maryam Miller is a contemporary painter working in abstract landscape. Her practice draws from two environments defined by scale: the coastline of La Jolla and the mountain terrain of Colorado, both of which she returns to as a constant source of reference and feeling.

Miller's paintings occupy the space between control and release, each surface built through successive layers of pooled wash, coarse texture, and restrained mark-making. Her use of unprimed canvas is central to the work, acting as both ground and participant, its warmth surfacing through transparent washes of acrylic. Oil stick, texture medium, and deliberate negative space complete a material vocabulary that is spare but specific, producing compositions that feel simultaneously immediate and considered.

She is drawn to the aerial vantage point for what it does to proportion. From this distance, the world looks like it was always going to be fine. Her paintings are interested in vastness, and the quiet it produces.
